Wrong Way, Part 1

Amanda
Don’t let’s go yet.
Me
I wish we could stay and talk, but I have got to get back to the office.
Amanda
Oh Jerry you are the biggest thing that ever happened!
Me
I do have to get back or we’ll all have real problems.
Amanda
Not us, sweetie! I haven’t had a problem since I found you.
Amanda
How long has it been, Jerry?
Me
Three months and two days since we got together at the Wednesday afternoon meeting, lovely meeting.
Amanda
Jerry, How’s Martha?
Me
Martha? Wonderful.
Amanda
Good. I’ve never seen her seem happier!
Amanda
Strange, isn’t it? Ian and I are happy too.  Marriage has never been smoother.
Me
It’s not strange at all. You’re a prettier, more exciting person because of us.
Amanda
I never thought of it that way.
Me
And, yes, I’m a happier man. We’re happier, so we make other people happy.
Amanda
How long will it last till it’s finished?
Me
We’ll know, we’ll know, just the way we knew when it began.
Amanda
How did it begin? I know but, please, you tell me.
Me
I think it began when Martha and I first moved to the suburbs. I was looking for something, hoping for something.
Me
I didn’t know just what it was, and there you were one enchanting evening, over by a barbecue pit, with mustard on your chin.
Amanda
You make it sound so romantic, Jerry. Have you, did you ever feel this way about anyone before, since you’ve been married?
Me
No darling, you know that. That’s why we have to make the most of it, and at the same time, not be greedy.
Amanda
When did you start to feel this way about me?
Me
Oh babe, it was long before I met you! Maybe because, because I wanted something more than this silly round of ordinary things I was doing. I think I felt that, that you were someone special, not just a suburban housewife. Then, when I discovered that you were bored with Ian:, I thought maybe . . .
Amanda
I love Ian:, I love my husband very much!
Me
Of course you do! Look, will we understand each other? You know that I love Martha, but we both know that you can love someone very much and still be attracted to someone else at the same time.
Amanda
Yes, I know that now. I never did before. I’m just lucky that you discovered it with me.   Let’s just say we’re both lucky. Mind if I put my head on your shoulder?
Me
That’s a silly question.
Amanda
All right, I’ll ask another one. Why do other people who do what we do get themselves in such messes? Can you clear that up a little?
Amanda
Oh Jerry, you know what I mean: you read about it every day in the papers, married people who find somebody else attractive and do something about it, then end up in the divorce court or worse.
Me
Because they’re not honest.
Amanda
Are we honest, Jerry? Sneaking off once a week to meet secretly? I haven’t told Ian.
Me
Martha doesn’t know about us, and she’s not going to.
Amanda
Is that honest?
Me
I meant that we’re honest with each other.
Me
We always knew neither of us wanted a divorce, or a scandal, and we didn’t want to hurt anybody, and we’re not. What Ian: and Martha don’t know won’t hurt them, and in the meantime we have something that’s important to us both.
Amanda
What about the ones who get caught?
Me
They’re stupid or greedy! They lose perspective and make seeing each other the most important thing in the world. They get careless.
Amanda
You’re wonderful.
Me
We know what we’re doing.
Amanda
Mmm-hmm, we certainly do.
Me
Remember I’m driving!
Amanda
I love you, Jerry, and we’re coming into town.
Me
Where do you want me to drop you?
Amanda
Same place, I can get the bus from the shopping center, take home a little present for Ian:. He won’t know where I’ve been all afternoon.
Me
Don’t take him a present every Wednesday, babe. That will look funny.
Amanda
Don’t worry Jerry, we’ll keep our secret.
Me
And now I suggest you take your head off my shoulder for a goodbye kiss
Amanda
WATCH OUT! Oh no!
Me
What?
Amanda
Look! Did we hit him?
Me
Kid came out of a side street on a bicycle without even looking!
Amanda
Jerry, what are you doing?
Me
Going back!
Amanda
You can’t! Stop the car!

Watch for Part 2, coming soon!
