Doubtless you have a nervous disorder, some disease perhaps dulling or destroying your ability to sense what is real.\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> True, but the disease has sharpened my senses\u2014not destroyed\u2014not dulled them.&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> Please explain the difference. And pray tell how then you did not hear anything of the old man&#8217;s destruction and disappearance?\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? Hearken! and observe how healthily\u2014how calmly I can tell you the whole story.\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-whole-story\">The whole story<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"CV-messages-container CV-mainContainer-android\" style=\" background: none; background-color: #cc0000;\"><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> Let&#8217;s back up to the beginning of this scary chat story of yours. Tell me the whole tale, by all means; you clever fellow!\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. Object? There was none. Passion? There was none.&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> You did not dislike the old man?\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> I loved the old man. He had never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire.\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> You must have disliked something about him! What could it have been?\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this! He had the eye of a vulture\u2014a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; and so by degrees\u2014very gradually\u2014I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever.\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> But that&#8217;s so trivial, so pointless! And yet you say you are not mad?\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> Now this is the point, you fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me.&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> I did see you.&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> Now that, too, seems mad. You are the detective, as you stated, although how you came here so quickly after\u2014\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> You were saying?\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\">: You should have seen how wisely I proceeded\u2014with what caution\u2014with what foresight\u2014with what dissimulation I went to work! I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him.&nbsp;\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> Ah! So, you admit you actually did it!\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> Every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it\u2014oh so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed, that no light shone out, and then I thrust in my head. Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust it in!\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> But I dared not laugh in observing you! Any audible sound might have been your undoing, or the old man&#8217;s, who you loved! The lantern revealed an angelic face in slumber, did it not?\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-incomingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Suspect<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-incomingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> I moved it slowly\u2014very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man\u2019s sleep. It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed. Ha! would a madman have been so wise as this?\n\n\n\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"msg-container CV-messageContainer-android\" style=\"\"><div class=\"CV-message-author CV-outgoingAuthor-android\" style=\"\">Me<\/div><div class=\"CV-message CV-outgoing CV-outgoingMessage-android \" style=\"\"> Doubtless it seemed wise to you at the time. But does it still seem so wise after your confession?
